A significant majority of nearly 300 municipalities and counties approved referendum measures Tuesday that will allow officials to negotiate electricity rates with alternative suppliers in behalf of their residents.

In DuPage County early returns, Elmhurst Mayor Pete DiCianni and Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso were leading in their bids to earn slots on the November ballot for county board. Both were among the GOP’s top three vote-getters in their districts.
