Wilmette, May 15-23: Trees spray painted with orange smiley faces, and more

The following incidents were taken from Wilmette Police Department reports on May 15-23.


A bicycle, worth $360, was reported stolen from a possibly unlocked garage in the 1700 block of Highland Avenue sometime between 4 p.m. May 17 and 8:20 a.m. May 22.


A $50 skateboarding helmet was reported stolen from the bicycle rack outside Highcrest Middle School, 569 Hunter Road, between 8:45 a.m. May 21 and 3:40 p.m. May 23.

A $50 Apple iPhone was reported stolen from Gillson Park, 700 Michigan Ave., at 4:01 p.m. May 23. The phone’s owner had left it on the ground near a water fountain while she went for a run. When she returned, it was gone.

A $300 iPod was reported stolen from the Sheridan Shore Yacht Club, 20 Harbor Drive, while a man was taking sailing lessons at 3:30 p.m. May 8. The theft was reported May 17.


A Wilmette resident agreed to purchase a Blackberry cell phone from an Ohio man for $300 via Craigslist. The resident sent a cashier’s check, after which the seller said he mailed the phone. It never arrived, and the seller has stopped answering his telephone.


A $40 bicycle odometer was reported damaged at 12:08 May 23 after someone cut the cord while it was parked outside Highcrest Middle School on May 21.

The passenger side mirror of a car parked in the alley behind the 2000 block of Washington Street was knocked off sometime between 8:15 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. May 22, resulting in an unknown amount of damage.

The word “soba” was etched into a window frame and a brick pillar at the Metra train station, 722 Green Bay Road, sometime around 4 p.m. May 22, resulting in $50 in repairs.

Chalk graffiti was discovered on the door to McKenzie School, 649 Prairie Ave., at 11:30 p.m. May 21.

Two vehicles were damaged when a parkway tree limb in the 800 block of Greenwood Avenue fell on them at about 2:45 p.m. May 20.

Twelve trees in the 1700 block of Highland Avenue were discovered spray painted with an orange smiley face at 3 p.m. May 18.


A 40-year-old Chicago woman was arrested at 8:26 p.m. May 22 near the intersection of Ridge Road and Rogers Avenue in Kenilworth and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Her blood-alcohol content to be .268, more than three times the legal limit.

A 59-year-old Oak Park woman was arrested 12:12 a.m. May 16 in the 1900 block of Lake Avenue and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane usage and speeding.
