Stationery store in Wilmette robbed by man who implied he had a knife

Wilmette police are searching for a man who implied he had a knife when he robbed a stationery store Wednesday morning.

Police say a man walked into Yellow Bird stationery store, 1515 Sheridan Road, at the Plaza Del Lago shopping center, at 10:51 a.m. and handed a note which implied he had a knife to the clerk.

He left the store with $200 and was last seen walking north, toward Kenilworth, police were told.

The man was described as white, in his early 20s, about 5-foot 8-inches tall and 160 pounds. He was wearing a red zip-up hooded sweatshirt with the word “Lifeguard” on the back and dark brown khaki shorts. The store employee told police he smelled strongly of cigarette smoke.

Detectives were unable to find someone matching the description after searching the area.
