WWS powers its way to another perfect season

Wheaton Warrenville South’s boys volleyball team enjoyed its third perfect season in school history after beating Glenbrook North, 25-21, 25-13 to win the Illinois High School Association state title Saturday, June 2, at Hoffman Estates High School.
Since the IHSA held its first boys volleyball tournament in 1992, only three other teams won state titles with perfect records – Richards in 1992 and Wheaton Warrenville South in 2001 and 2004. All three WWS perfect season came under the watch of coach Bill Schreier.
The Tigers finished with a 42-0 mark in 2012 and only lost two sets all season – one against Glenbrook North during the regular season and the other against Downers Grove North in the sectional semifinals.
In the state championship battle, Thomas Jaeschke has 12 kills and Tim Zyburt added eight for the winners. Glenbrook was led by Pat Bedford’s seven kills.
Other members of the state championship Tigers squad were seniors Kit Bruzek, Dan Eastman, Nick Smith, Jason Simon, Nick Campos, Alex Valdez, Matt Callaway, Jared Chandler, Trevor Wills and Matt Nussbaum plus juniors Greg Vlassov and Ryan McCarthy and sophomore Jared Wilcox.
Barrington finished third after a 25-18, 20-25, 25-18 victory over Minooka. Jeff Hochstein and Tommy Leonard each had 13 kills to lead Barrington.
