Former president of Sommer & Maca, longtime volunteer dies

When Paul Donald Maca retired as president of Sommer & Maca Industries in 1986, he had the means, friends and golf game for a relaxing retirement.

Instead, he took a different direction, serving as chairman of the Robert Crown Health Education Center and on the boards of the Wellness House, a nonprofit cancer support facility in Hinsdale, and the Western Springs Community Center Association.

“He could have very easily closed up shop and spent his time on the golf course; he was an excellent golfer,” said Dick Carroll, president of the glass working machinery division at Cicero-based C.R. Laurence Co., which bought Sommer & Maca in 2008. “But Paul wasn’t like that. He wanted to make a difference. He wanted to do something important for his community.”

Mr. Maca, 79, died of complications from Parkinson’s disease on Friday, July 29, at the Health Care Center at Plymouth Place, an assisted-living facility in La Grange Park. He was previously a longtime resident of Western Springs.
