A Food Desert in Lake County

With the arrival of Mariano's in Vernon Hills I am reminded of the food desert in other parts of Lake County where some communities don't have access to fresh food, fruits and vegetables.

With the exception of a few mom and pop stores with high prices many people can't afford to bave a nutritious and healthy meal to service their families. That's one of the reasons for the soaring epidemic of diabetes, obesity, etc.

A food desert is any area in the industrialised world where healthy, affordable food is difficult to obtain. It is prevalent in rural as well as urban areas and is most prevalent in low-socioeconomic minority communities, and is associated with a variety of diet-related health problems. Food deserts are also linked with supermarket shortage.

Everyone should have access to wholesome nutritious food. Without it we can't eat well to live well!
