Update: Teen charged in school fire

A 15-year-old Hanover Park boy is charged as a juvenile with aggravated arson for allegedly starting a fire Friday at Schaumburg High School.

The juvenile was expected to appear at a detention hearing today in Cook County juvenile court in Chicago, according to Schaumburg police.

At 12:49 p.m. Friday, police and fire responded to the high school, 1100 W. Schaumburg Road, after a custodian saw smoke coming from a hazardous materials closet, police said.

The custodian was able to extinguish flames on the floor of the closet, and no one was injured, police said. Although the building was evacuated, students returned to class about 30 minutes later, said District 211 spokesman Tom Petersen.

Police did not release details of how the fire started.

Officials estimate the blaze caused less than $2,000 in damages, and repairs were expected to be complete before school resumed for the week.
