North’s Cessily Jones leads area in state girls track meet

Plainfield North's Cessily Jones was eyeing a couple of state titles, but the sophomore still dazzled with a pair of fourth-place finishes.

Jones was fourth in the Class 3A 100 and 200 dashes at the Illinois High School Association girls track and field meet May 21 and 22 at O'Brien Field in Charleston.

She clocked an 11.90-second run in the 100 and a :24.43 in the 200. Both of those times would have won state championships in the 2009 state meet.

Last year, she burst onto the scene with a fourth-place finish in the 200 and seventh-place in the 100.

"It's much different than last year," she said. "I knew that every race counted and couldn't mess up in any race. The strategy was a fast start and to run very well, make it to the finals and try to dominate in the finals."

Lincoln-Way East freshman Aaliyah Brown won the 100 with an :11.57 and Thorntons Ashley Stacey won the 200 with a :24.26.

North sophomore Cara Hahne also made the second day of state action and finished 12th in the discus with a 114-06 throw.

In the 4x100 event, Bolingbrooks Kim Azie, Kymbriona Taylor, Aleesha Govan and Mercedes Griffin finished ninth in the state with a :49.34.

Hinsdale Central won its first state title by claiming the Class 3A crown with 47.5 points, beating out East St. Louis (44), Thornton (43) and Edwardsville (40).
