Plainfield Fire Department: Dramatic Home Fire Sprinkler Demonstration

On Wednesday, May 30, the Plainfield Fire Protection District hosted a live, side-by-side fire and sprinkler burn demonstration for the public. The demonstration displayed the tremendous speed of a typical home fire and its potential for deadly destruction, as well as the vital importance of home fire sprinkler technology that can save lives and reduce property damage.

The fire in the unsprinklered room reached flashover, the temperature at which everything in the room ignites in flames and the fire becomes unsurvivable, in approximately two minutes. In the room protected with a single fire sprinkler, the fire sprinkler activated in less than a half minute after the fire began and controlled the fire, saving the contents of the room.

The fire protection district was one of 50 fire departments nationwide to receive a stipend from the national nonprofit Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC) to conduct the fire and sprinkler demonstration educational program. HFSC’s stipend program is funded through a Fire Prevention & Safety Grant awarded by the Grant Programs Directorate of FEMA.
