As free rides on the CTA, Metra and Pace end for most senior citizens in less than a week, transit officials on Thursday offered help, apologies and encouragement about how to use new reduced-fare cards.

The new process will be a chore to get started, but resuming reduced fares will provide an estimated $30 million a year in new revenue to the transit agencies, officials said.

Many seniors have already expressed confusion and frustration over the new cards mailed to them by the Regional Transportation Authority because the cards were not accompanied by any instructions.
