[Bridgeview, IL] Twenty five (25) staff and faculty members of Northwestern College participated in the Bridgeview Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s 2011-2012 Pen Pal Program with Bridgeview School’s second grade classes. Multiple businesses of the Bridgeview community participated, providing pen pals for seventy five (75) second graders during the spring quarter of the school year. The first letter was sent in March, with a total of three letters exchanged. The program culminated in a pizza party on May 17th where the children got to meet their pen pals. Northwestern College donated the pizza for the party while Walmart provided juice. The Bridgeview Culver’s Restaurant also provided ice cream for everyone. Other businesses that participated in the Pen Pal Program were Archer Bank, Marquette Bank, the Village of Bridgeview and the Bridgeview Bank.

Last fall the Chamber conducted a similar Pen Pal exchange with Bridgeview School’s fourth grade classes. Letters were exchanged three times between October and December, concluding with a pizza party in December, which was also sponsored by Northwestern College, Walmart and Culvers.

The Bridgeview Chamber of Commerce & Industry has conducted this Pen Pal Program for many years, however this was the first year it was coordinated by Chamber Board Member Amy Buoscio, who also serves as the Career Development and Alumni Relations Coordinator for Northwestern College’s Bridgeview Campus.

“All of us at Northwestern College thoroughly enjoyed communicating with our second grade pen pals at Bridgeview School!” commented Buoscio. “We were especially impressed by the writing abilities of the second graders, their enthusiasm about school, and their varied interests. We will definitely participate in this community event in the future!”
