The heat is over, at least for the foreseeable future. A huge realignment is underway across the Lower 48 and is likely to slash more than 30 degrees off daytime temperatures in the next two days.

Today’s more modest 85-degree high is but the beginning of a temperature downturn expected to send daytime readings to near 70 Wednesday and to April like 60s on Thursday and Friday. Soaking rains could make a dent in a largely dry May across the Chicago area.

The daytime 60s predicted for Thursday and Friday would rank as this area’s chilliest readings in three weeks and would be in marked contrast to May’s overall warmth.
