Since 1990, only five TribLocal area teams have won Illinois High School Association boys track and field state titles.

Joliet West won the Class AA title in 1990, Wheaton Warrenville South won Class AA titles in 1996 and 1999 and York won a Class AA crown in 2000 and a Class 3A title in 2009.

Ten area teams that won sectional titles this year hope to reverse that trend. The state meet begins Thursday at O’Brien Field on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

In Class 3A, Cary-Grove, Lockport, Wheaton North, Oak Park, Fremd and Evanston claimed sectional crowns last week. In Class 2A, Kaneland, Glenbard South, Providence Catholic and Grayslake Central all won sectional titles.

Even if a state team title is not in the cards, there are plenty of individual standouts to keep an eye on.

In Class 3A, several TribLocal area athletes had the top sectional times/distances in the state heading into the meet.

In the field events, Wheaton North junior Zach Gordon has the top long jump distance of 24 feet, 2 1/2 inches. Plainfield North sophomore Luke Winder is No. 1 in the pole vault at 15-9. Marmion Academy senior Peter Stefanski is the top high jumper at 7-feet. Cary-Grove senior Josh Freeman is on top of the shot put event with a 60-11 3/4. Grant junior Brandon Lombardino is the top seed in the discus throw with a 180-11.

In the running events, Oak Park River Forest senior Malachy Schrobilgen has the top time in the 3200 with an 8:57.60. Maine South senior Michal Filipczak is the top seed in the 800 with a 1:51.93. Plainfield East senior Stepfan Thelemaque earned the top time in the 400 with a :48.90. Glenbard West’s Mike Lederhouse has the top seed in the 1600 with a 4:13.56.

New Trier’s 4×800 relay team (7:44.30) also picked up a top seed.

In Class 2A, Providence Catholic sophomore Mike Monroe has the top seed in the high jump with a 6-7. Glenbard West senior Wesley Sanders is No. 1 in the 100 dash with a :10.81. Providence Catholic junior Andrew Helmin had the top time in the 300 hurdles with a :38.36.

In Class 1A, Westmont sophomore Tim Doll earned the top time in the 400 with a :49.96 and Aurora Christian’s 4×400 relay team heads into the state meet with a top time of 3:24.53.
