Chicago Bear Defensive End, Israel Idonije, well known for his good work on-and-off the football field, surprised a graduating Fenger High School senior with a $5300 scholarship provided by Fifth Third Bank recently.

Fenger has been a poster-child of sorts for troubled schools after an amateur video of a brawl traveled over the world showing dozens of people punching, kicking, and swinging wooden boards in the street. Student Derrion Albert, 16, was struck, stomped on after falling to the ground, and killed.

Today, school officials report, that 86% of the senior class will graduate. This number is almost double that which the school saw just a few years ago. Today the school has a "conflict resolution" officer and office that provides students with a space where they can learn how to cope with anger.

Idonije's $5300 provided by Fifth Third Bank will be applied to the first year of college for Tatiana Woulard. Tatiana has been a student leader and mentor at Fenger and is going to Iowa State University to become a pharmacist.

“I am so grateful to Fifth Third Bank for their honor and this scholarship,” Idonije said. “I couldn’t be happier about the student we’ve selected. This young woman is someone who has been actively involved in student leadership and mentoring, and is a big proponent of volunteering in her community.”
