Playwright, Alex Dennison (Mark Brewer) and Monica Welles (Elizabeth Rude) plan their marriage, just before her suicide - or was it murder?

Playwright, Alex Dennison (Mark Brewer) and Monica Welles (Elizabeth Rude) plan their marriage, just before her suicide - or was it murder?

Park Ridge residents Dave Downing and Ron Denham are co-directing “Rehearsal for Murder,” at the James Downing Theatre in the Edison Park area of Chicago.

The James Downing Theatre, based on Chicago’s Northwest Side, will begin its 2011-2012 season on October 15 with “Rehearsal for Murder” from the teleplay by Richard Levinson and William Link and adapted for stage by D.D. Brooke. The show runs weekends, October 15 through Oct. 30.

The theatre will become the set for this play-within-a-play. It is exactly a year after the opening night of another play in this same theater when playwright Alex Dennison (Mark Brewer) assembles the cast and crew (Elizabeth Dallmeyer, Neal Goldman, Rick Goldman, Emily Jusino, David Kravitz, Erik Martin, Floyd A. May, Julie Mitre, Jessica Moen, and Manny Schenk) for the first reading of the new play. Everyone connected with this play was involved in the show exactly one year ago when the lead female and playwright’s fiancée, Monica Welles (Elizabeth Rude) was murdered. As the read-through begins, startling connections to the murder unfold. Surprising revelations and accusations include dazzling and logical twists that build to a climax and solution that is theatrically stunning mystery and suspense.

Performances will be Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 1:30 p.m. at the Edison Park United Methodist Church’s John Waldron Arts Center, 6740 N. Oliphant Ave., Chicago. General Admission tickets are $20, senior citizen and student tickets are $15, and group rates are available at $13 per person for groups of 10 or more.
