Even though downtown Chicago baked in 97-degree heat at midday, the National Weather Service said it was looking less likely — but still possible — that the official high today will hit 100 for the first time since 2005.

The official recording station at O’Hare International Airport registered just 93 degrees at noon, but temperatures were still dangerously hot throughout the Chicago area. The humidity made it feel like 99 at O’Hare and 102 Wheeling, Northerly Island and Waukegan.

“It doesn’t look as likely,” said National Weather Servce meteorologist Richard Castro this afternoon when asked about hitting the 100 mark.

But the expected lakefront cooling won’t be very strong and a cold front won’t arrive until late in the afternoon, Castro said. So temperatures could even hit 101, which would tie the record for the date. By 2 p.m., temperatures had climbed to 98 at O’Hare, with a heat index of 107, and 99 at the lakefront, with  heat index of 110.

Scorcher: Thursday will be hottest day in nearly 7 years /niles/2012/06/27/scorcher-thursday-will-be-hottest-day-in-nearly-7-years/ /niles/2012/06/27/scorcher-thursday-will-be-hottest-day-in-nearly-7-years/#comments Wed, 27 Jun 2012 15:15:28 +0000 Heather Leszczewicz /barrington/?p=32094 Thursday is shaping up to be the hottest day in nearly seven years, with highs of 100 degrees or more that could set a new record.

The last time we topped 100 degrees at O’Hare International Airport — the city’s official recording station — was back on July 24, 2005 when the mercury climbed to 102 degrees. The record for June 28 is 101 degrees, set in 1971.

We’ll get a running start Wednesday with sunny skies and highs in the mid 90s. On Thursday, sunny again with the temperature likely to hit 101, according to the Chicago Weather Center. The combination of heat and humidity will make it feel more like 105 to 110.

Cook County property values going down, but tax bills headed up /niles/2012/06/27/cook-county-property-values-going-down-but-tax-bills-headed-up/ /niles/2012/06/27/cook-county-property-values-going-down-but-tax-bills-headed-up/#comments Wed, 27 Jun 2012 13:41:30 +0000 Heather Leszczewicz /palatine/?p=33903 When Cook County homeowners get their property tax bills in about a week, most will owe more than last year despite continuing decreases in their assessed property values, experts said Tuesday.

Taxpayers often don’t understand a simple truth that governs the complicated property tax system: Unlike sales and income taxes, property taxes are designed to collect a fixed amount of money, whatever the market fluctuations.

“Just because the values dropped does not mean taxing districts are going to be getting less money or taxpayers are going to be paying less,” said Bill Vaselopulos, who is in charge of tax rate calculations for Cook County Clerk David Orr. “As values drop, (they are) offset by the increase in the tax rate.”

Skilling: Pleasant end to the work week /niles/2012/06/22/skilling-pleasant-end-to-the-work-week/ /niles/2012/06/22/skilling-pleasant-end-to-the-work-week/#comments Fri, 22 Jun 2012 13:14:05 +0000 Kara Silva /barrington/?p=31890

The work week ends with sunshine and warmth but without the humidity that smothered the first half of the week.

Friday is to deliver 85-degree warmth for the 25th time this year in a month running a solid 5 degrees above normal — the ninth consecutive month to produce a temperature surplus here and the warmest June of the past quarter century.

On Saturday June 9, 2012, the Niles Fire Department celebrated their 100th anniversary as a chartered department

The day began with a pre-Open House Ceremony attended by Mayor Callero, Village Trustees and the Village Manager as well as retirees and current department members and their families. Fire Chief Steve Borkowski spoke to the past, present and future of the department and its members, stating “These many generations of Niles firefighters over the past 100 years have met any challenge that was presented to them with confidence, determination, expertise and a desire to help people.” Mayor Robert Callero also spoke, thanking department members, past and present on behalf of the community that they have served. The ceremony concluded with the ringing of the department volunteer bell in honor of the Niles firefighters who have passed away.

Following the ceremony, the station was opened to the general public where it is estimated that approximately 800 people attended the festivities which included live demonstrations by Niles firefighters of extrication, rappelling off of the roof, a live burn, Emergency Medical Services demonstrations and a health information booth staffed by Advocate Lutheran General Hospital personnel. Firefighters and Niles Explorer Post 28 cooked hot dogs, scooped ice cream, manned fire safety booths and activities for children as well as welcomed and interacted with members of the community.

Winners and losers: Chicago-area casinos 20 years later /niles/2012/06/21/winners-and-losers-chicago-area-casinos-20-years-later/ /niles/2012/06/21/winners-and-losers-chicago-area-casinos-20-years-later/#comments Thu, 21 Jun 2012 11:52:42 +0000 Heather Leszczewicz /des-plaines/?p=45493

The first suburban Chicago casino opened 20 years ago this month, bringing with it hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars in taxes, but also stories of gambling addiction and hardship for some area residents.

Joliet’s Empress Casino, which was renamed Hollywood Casino Joliet in 2010, welcomed its first customers in June 1992. Over the next two years, casinos opened in Joliet, Aurora and Elgin. Rivers Casino in Des Plaines opened last July, and gambling expansion talks in Springfield could put new casinos in the north and south suburbs and downtown Chicago.

During the past two decades, the fissure between casino supporters and opponents has remained deep.
