Fox Valley Festival Chorus highlights talents of Naperville residents

The Fox Valley Festival Chorus has begun the countdown to its very own 20th Century Countdown spring concert which will be held on Sunday, June 10, 2012, at 3:00 pm, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Aurora, Illinois. The church is located at 10 N. Edgelawn (the corner of Edgelawn and Galena).

Under the direction of Naperville resident Mary Beth McCarthy, the 40+voice chorus will sing a medley of hits grouped by decade from 1900 – 2000. Some of the selections include “Bird in a Gilded Cage,” “Thriller,” ‘Fame,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “I Believe I Can Fly,” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” plus dozens more. McCarthy, a Naperville resident, is Director of Instrumental Music at IMSA. Bonnie Werthmann of Aurora is the accompanist. Members of this community chorus, now in its 57th year, live and work in all areas of Kane, Kendall, and DuPage Counties and represent a range in ages of almost seven decades.

The concert will also feature a trivia quiz, fun facts about the pop culture from each decade plus key facts in honor of the City of Aurora’s 175th Birthday, provided by the Aurora Historical Society. A special highlight of the concert is a selection of video game music arranged by Chorus member and Naperville resident, Mary Kukla.

Following the concert a special American Bandstand Tribute Party reception will continue the musical fun. Chorus members will share their memories of dance fads and hair styles from their own high school years. The refreshments will include cookies which were popular during specific decades as researched by the youngest Chorus member Brittany Belle of Naperville.

During the reception, the Chorus will be selling hand-crafted items which they have made from record albums, covers, and liners as part of the “Let’s Make it a Record-Breaking Season” fund-raising promotion. Items for sale include clocks, jewelry, baskets, bowls, boxes, bookmarks, and many other decorative and gift items.

Tickets for the concert are available from Chorus members and at the door. Prices are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 65+, and $5 for children 12 and under. A special group rate is available for groups of 10 or more. Group rate tickets must be ordered in advance. Admission to the Tribute Party and Craft Sale is free for concert goers or $1.00 for others.
