Naperville North, Wheaton St. Francis claim state soccer titles

The state championship trophies stayed close to home.
Naperville North and Wheaton St. Francis won Illinois High School Association state girls soccer championships Saturday, June 2 at North Central College in Naperville.
Naperville North, 24-1-2, won the Class 3A crown with a wild 1-0 victory over St. Charles North in four overtimes while St. Francis, 24-4, beat Chatham Glenwood, 2-1, to win the Class 2A crown.

Naperville won the first soccer state title in 1988 and despite five top-four finishes over the years, had not won the top prize until Saturday when junior Christa Szalach found the net with 42 seconds left in the fourth OT for her eighth goal of the season.
“Honestly, I didn’t even know how much time was left,” she told the Tribune after the game. “Every team wants to be No. 1 and we did it tonight.”
Naperville beat Glenbrook South, 2-0, in the semifinals on June 1 with junior Zoe Swift picking up two unassisted goals. Goalie Allison Hitchcock notched the two shutouts for the tournament.
Other members of the Huskies roster include seniors Melanie Hegner, Hunter Drendel, Jen Korn, Anna Prescott, Kirstin Deichstetter and Brittany Weizeorick plus juniors Caroline Rico, Maria Grygleski, Angela Widlacki, Cora Climo, Jillian VanKampen, Emily Bromagen and Tracy Korn.
Also on the roster are sophomores Meghan Lee, Sarah Feder and Abby Mangefrida plus freshmen Kayla Sharples, Abbie Boswell and Fiona Baezinger.
St. Charles North reached the finals with a 2-1 victory over Downers Grove South as Lauren Koehl and Sophie Pohl scored goals.
Downers Grove South won the third-place game with a 2-1 shootout win over Glenbrook South to send retiring coach Barry Jacobsen (489 wins in 29 seasons) out a winner.

Class 2A
St. Francis made its first appearance in the final four worthwhile as it brought home a state title after a 1-0 victory over St. Viator in the semifinals and the 2-1 win over Chatham Glenwood in the finals.

Taylor Bucaro scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the second half and Andrea Ravlin scored one in the first half of the title game. Amanda Gaggioli had the only goal in the semifinal against St. Viator.
Other members of the Spartans include seniors Sydney Fox, Sarah Rahman and Katie Ramsey and juniors Katie Roback, Lauren Shields, Sarah Rahman, Ally Mastroianni, Meghan Wagner, Emma Fickle, Christy Peplow, Kaity Bucaro, Anna VonderHaar and Jenna Ditusa.
Also on the squad are sophomores Samantha Radel, Alexa Zepeda, Brittany Douglass and Brianna Miulli plus freshmen Courtenay Hart and Taylor Van Thournout.
St. Viator recovered from its semifinal loss to the Spartans to beat Normal University High, 4-1. Katelyn Hammarlund had two goals while Erin Renee Murphy and Erin Malone each added one goal.
