Senate President John Cullerton’s mother, Naperville resident dies

Mary Patricia Cullerton, mother of Illinois Senate President John J. Cullerton, died Friday, Sept. 30, in a Naperville nursing home. She was 85 and had recently suffered a stroke, her family said.

The former Mary Patricia Tyrrell was born on Chicago’s West Side on Sept. 16, 1926. She met John J. Cullerton Sr. at a roller skating rink when she was 14 years old and later married into his powerful political family.

The Cullertons have been involved in Illinois politics since Edward F. Cullerton was elected a state representative in 1872, according to Mrs. Cullerton’s son. They have had a political presence in Chicago’s 38th Ward since 1933.

Mrs. Cullerton’s husband, however, was not involved in politics. He worked for Illinois Bell Telephone Co. while Mrs. Cullerton raised their nine children in Winfield.

She was a lifelong Democrat and longtime election judge in heavily Republican DuPage County, her son said.
