Thousands flock to outdoor shrine at Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel

Thousands of Catholic followers ventured Dec. 4 and 5 to an outdoor shrine at Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel in Des Plaines to take part in the annual festival honoring the Virgin of Guadalupe.

The festivities, which mark St. Juan Diegos vision of the Virgin Mary in 1531 in Mexico City, included a procession to the shrine, a candlelight ceremony, dancing, Mexican food, a Spanish Mass and a fireworks display. On Saturday, Cardinal Francis George led a noon Mass at the shrine, located on the campus of Maryville Academy at Central and River roads.

In observance of the event, participantsmany of whom traveled miles on foot from parishes in Chicago and other areasplaced bouquets of flowers, lit candles and offered photos and other mementos that were placed near the shrine.
