Senate Republican leader: Schmidt tapes ‘troubling’

Embattled state Sen. Suzi Schmidt now faces political pressure from Senate Republican leadership over allegations that she attempted to clout police into ignoring her husband’s call for help during a marital dispute last Christmas.

Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno issued a statement today that acknowledged Schmidt’s highly personal matter but also left little doubt that more is expected from a public official.

“Sen. Suzi Schmidt is a colleague coping with a personal crisis,” said Radogno, of Lemont. “However, these revelations are extremely troubling. As public officials, we are held to a higher standard. We cannot and will not tolerate abuse of the public trust.”
