TAKE A BEAUTIFUL WALK AROUND A LAKE – and learn more about oral cancer

The Beastie Boys, one of the most long-lived and world-wide popular hip hop groups, lost original member Adam Yauch to oral cancer just a few days ago. He joins Beatle George Harrison, singer/drummer Levon Helms, Sammy Davis Jr. and Humphrey Bogart to name a few stars who have also succumbed to oral cancer. Peter Tork (The Monkees), Eddie Van Halen, star chef Grant Achatz and Roger Ebert have fought the battle against this brutal disease and are still with us.

But the Oral Cancer Foundation estimates that 40,000 people this year will be diagnosed with some form of oral cancer which includes lip, tongue, mouth, cheek, salivary glands and throat areas. Early detection through exams by your dentist can help save lives.

Alison Stahl, a registered dental hygienist, decided it was time to do something to educate the public about oral cancer. She pulled her hygienist friends together, gathered other interested people and this mighty group of volunteers has organized the First Annual Northern Illinois Oral Cancer Awareness Walk on Sunday, June 10 at Lake Arlington, 2201 N. Windsor Drive in Arlington Heights. Start time is 8am.

Alison’s team has already raised $30,000 in sponsorships and more than 300 walkers have registered. Our goal is 500 walkers so come on out and join us! You can register online at www.oralcancerfoundation.org/events or at the site on June 10. Proceeds from the walk benefit the Oral Cancer Foundation, a national non-profit organization founded by oral cancer survivor Brian Hill. The event also features a silent auction with some amazing offers and a raffle.
