Vernon Library ESL class hosts multicultural holiday

VAPLD ESL 2011 food

English as a Second Language (ESL) students at the Vernon Area Public Library wrapped up their fall semester last week with a multicultural holiday celebration. The students each brought a dish to share from their country of origin, creating a smorgasbord reflective of the class’s diversity: Japanese sushi, Indian "seven cup" cake, Chinese shao raisin cake, and more.

English as a Second Language is offered at the Vernon Area Public Library free of charge through a regional program coordinated by the Adult and Continuing Education department at Mundelein High School, and funded by a state and federal grant. The class meets from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays during the school year at the Vernon Area Public Library. Other class times and locations are also available, contact Mundelein High School for information at or call 847-949-2200 x1399.

The Vernon Area Public Library District serves a population of 41,000 within a 32-square-mile area that includes Lincolnshire, Prairie View, and parts of Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, Riverwoods, Vernon Hills, and unincorporated Vernon Township.
