Author Rebecca Makkai will be at the U.S. end of the event, to be broadcast to Poole, Dorset, U.K.

Chicago-area author Rebecca Makkai and library patrons in Lincolnshire, Ill., will videoconference with library guests in Poole, U.K., for a transatlantic author event in support of Makkai’s novel, “The Borrower,” on Nov. 29, 2011, at 1 p.m. CST.

Following a brief local group discussion of the book, the author will join the group at the Vernon Area Public Library in person for a book talk and reading that will be broadcast to the partner library in England. Participants from both sides of the Atlantic will have the opportunity to ask questions of the author.

Registered participants will receive a complimentary copy of the book, courtesy of the publisher (limited to first 25 registered participants), which the author will sign at the event. Advance reading of the book is not required to attend. Refreshments will be served.

The discussion and transatlantic author event is the first of its kind for these libraries, and possibly the first of its kind ever. The occasion is the result of a contest among libraries in the U.K. arranged by Reading Partners, a collaborative network of European publishers and libraries. Vernon Area Public Library was selected as the U.S. host as a result of its reputation for great author events and its proximity to Lake Forest, where the author lives.

The novel, "The Borrower," was praised by Oprah’s O Magazine, Good Housekeeping, and Library Journal, among others. A witty crime farce, it tells the story of a hapless librarian who becomes an accidental kidnapper (or possibly “kidnappee”) as she embarks on a journey with a quirky 10-year-old patron. The odd pair embarks on a crazy road trip from Missouri to Vermont, with ferrets, an inconvenient boyfriend, and upsetting family history thrown in their path.

This event is free and open to all, but registration is required. Register online at www.vapld.info, by telephone at 224-543-1485, or in person at the Adult Services Desk in the library.
