Staff at The Ponds Celebrate the First Day of Summer

For individuals struggling with memory loss the date June 21 may not have meaning, but a hands-on celebration of the first day of summer can be both fun and have a therapeutic value. Staff at The Ponds, an assisted-living facility in Lincolnshire, take activities-based care very seriously, even when they are having fun.

"While a resident may not remember a specific date, they are going to have emotional connections to childhood memories, like playing in the sand or hitting a volleyball," says Shari Floss, Director of Memory Care Services at The Ponds and its sister community The Wealshire. "While our residents may not be able to hit the beach, we can bring that summer experience to them."

Activities in honor of the first day of summer included a beach ball volleyball game, sun hats and flip flops, and summer foods like watermelon and a "beach cake." Colorful decorations and beach blankets added to the environment.

"A lot of times it is about the little things," Floss explained. "You never know what item, scent or color will help make a connection and bring a smile to the face of a resident."
