Titanic Artifacts Visit Joliet

Titanic Artifacts Visit Joliet at “Remembering the Titanic”

On April 14, 1912 passenger liner RMS Titanic struck an iceberg which resulted in the death of 1,517 individuals. On April 14, 2012, exactly one hundred years later, the Joliet Public Library will pay tribute to those who lost their lives and those who survived the deadliest peacetime disaster at sea.

The library will commemorate the centennial anniversary with a day of activities – "Remembering the Titanic" will feature a display of authentic artifacts, two author presentations, a dramatic presentation, a performance of live music, crafts for children, and Titanic era attire. The day will conclude with a viewing of the Titanic documentary, "Titanic: Death of a Dream."

Titanic historian, Denise Vanaria who has been featured on the National Geographic channel, will display Titanic artifacts during her dramatic presentation as Mrs. Thomas Andrews, wife of Titanic chief designer, Thomas Andrews. Through her presentation, Ms. Vanaria will connect the audience to the emotions of “the loved ones who were left behind.” This presentation will be conducted in full Edwardian fashion, the attire worn during the Titanic era, and will run approximately 60 minutes, beginning at 12:00 P.M.

Author Ray Johnson will discuss the “Chicago Connection” at 10:00 A.M. followed by a discussion about Edwardian Shipbuilding by the author of “Titanic: The Ship Magnificent,” Bruce Beveridge at 10:45 A.M.

In addition to the artifact display and presentations, there will be a live musical performance featuring the songs played aboard the Titanic, a meet and greet with the authors, display of a gown that appeared in the James Cameron Titanic movie, and the unveiling of a commemorative painting by artist Sylvia Storonowicz.

Remembering the Titanic is a free event which will be held at the Joliet Public Library’s Black Road Branch. No registration is required, but space is limited. This event is funded by the Friends of the Joliet Public Library and co-sponsored by Integrity Builders and General Contractors, Inc. For more information or a detailed schedule of the presentations please call Kim Neidermyer at 815-846-3124 or visit the library’s website at www.jolietlibrary.org.
