One Step Closer to Joliet VA Mega-Clinic

Dear Editor,

As the VA takes ownership today of the emergency room facility at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, I applaud the real heroes whose idea inspired widespread support for the new veterans mega-clinic. Today marks a significant milestone and puts us one step closer to celebrating the grand opening of the 60,000-square foot mega-clinic slated to open next spring.

This project would not soon be a reality if it weren’t for the determination and hard work of the Healthy Community Commission at Silver Cross Hospital, the folks at Hines VA and several of our local heroes who spearheaded the project, including Lockport American Legion Post 18 Commander Mike Meyers, Braidwood American Legion Koca Post 39 Commander Jim Canup, Bolingbrook American Legion Post 1288 member Elden Laffoon and Lockport American Legion Post 18 member John B. Tipton.

These veteran leaders came up with an idea that no one could resist. They had the determination to help drive it through the arduous federal approval process. For three years, my colleagues and I on both sides of the aisle lobbied the VA on their behalf because our veterans deserve the best when it comes to getting the care and benefits they have earned.
