Matt Mammosser felt like a relative to Lexie Dames before she knew he really was.

They went to different grammar schools but played in the same co-ed volleyball league during middle school. They also shared a group of friends.

That was before a T-shirt strengthened their bond the first time.

“He was like a big brother to me,” said Dames, a Minooka junior. “I remember in sixth grade him telling me that, ‘If this guy hurts you, I swear I’ll deal with him.’ He always cared about everybody before himself.
