One man killed, another injured in shootings near prison, police say

A 39-year-old Joliet-area man was gunned down and a second man was injured Monday night approximately one mile west of the Stateville Correctional Center.

Will County Sheriff’s Police spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said deputies responding to a 9:30 p.m. shooting report just north of the intersection of U.S. Route 30 and Caton Farm and Gaylord roads found the two men near a garage on the 25000 block of Hacker Avenue.

One man, who was unresponsive, was pronounced dead at the scene at 3 a.m. by the Will County Coroner’s Office. The second man, who had been grazed by a bullet, was transported to a local hospital for treatment, Hoffmeyer said.

A witness told investigators two men wearing dark clothing walked up to the victims and fired shots at their heads.

Sheriff’s Police are treating the shooting-death as a homicide and are not immediately releasing the name of the deceased man to protect the living victim, Hoffmeyer said.
