Yes, you could buy the latest game console for your niece or nephew. Then again, maybe your sister would love a basket of fruit – again – this Christmas. You might even take a look in the family room at your own brood of youngsters, their mouths hanging open as they’re mesmerized by the television screen. On the other hand, of course, imagine their surprise when they unwrap a gift certificate for martial arts lessons.

“Martial arts will get them up out of their chairs, that’s for sure,” said Master Bonnie Thiel, of AKF Spring Grove Flying Dragons. “Actually, it’s a great gift. While improving their physical condition, they’ll gain more self-confidence and will learn to defend themselves, as well.”

At AKF Spring Grove Flying Dragons, Master Thiel specializes in Kyuki-Do, Hapki-Do, JuiJitsu and other forms of martial arts. She also provides self-defense seminars and martial arts training for students with special needs.

“Kyuki-Do combines many aspects of Tae Kwon Do, Hapki-Do, Judo, JuiJitsu and other defensive arts,” Master Thiel said. “While a video game will give your children’s arteries an excuse to start clogging, martial arts can have a long-term influence on someone’s life. Physical conditioning is only one aspect of that.”
