Highland Park invites county residents to electronics recycling event

Lake County residents with old TVs, printers and computers are invited to Highland Park’s recycling extravaganza from 8 a.m. to noon Jan. 7, at the Firearms Training Center, 1180 Half Day Road, city officials said.

The recycling event, in partnerships with the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County, is in honor of the Illinois Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act, which bans electronics from landfills starting Jan. 1, officials said. According to the new law, certain electronics will no longer be accepted in landfills.

At the recycling event, Highland Park will be accepting computers, monitors, computer drives, keyboards, modems, mainframes, scanners, printers, PDA organizers, typewriters, calculators, cellular phones, TVs, stereos, MP3 players, CD players, DVD layers, VCRs, cameras, video games, fax machines, shredders, batteries, hair dryers, sewing machines, electric toy trains, electric toothbrushes and small household appliances.

Also, holiday lights, compact fluorescent light bulbs and clean polystyrene materials will be accepted as well as part of the city’s overall recycling efforts.

If county residents miss the Highland Park event, they can stop by other SWALCO-sanctioned recycling centers during the year.
