Glenview Blaze Honors US Troops

This Memorial Day weekend, the Glenview Blaze Elite Travel Baseball Organization supported our troops with their annual “Salute to the Troops” baseball tournament. More than 60 teams from throughout Illinois played games over the Memorial Day weekend.

In honor of men and women serving overseas, teams with players ranging from 10- to 14-years-old grabbed their bats and headed out to Glenview . The Blaze teams wore special camouflage jerseys to honor the soldiers. During the tournament, the Blaze collected cash donations and items to send to the troops. In addition, the Blaze families collectively made a special donation to the Wounded Warrior Fund. A full color guard and 21 gun salute from the local American Legion Post 166 acted as master of ceremonies before the championship games on Sunday. New this year, Sport Clips of Northbrook sponsored a “Buzz for the Troops” tent where the players could get a quick buzz cut for a troop donation.

The Glenview Blaze baseball teams all were up to the challenge of proving their club proud in their sponsored tournament. The 12U Blaze Red and the 14U Blaze took home the championships in their respective divisions, while the 10U Blaze and 11U Blaze took home the runner-up trophies in their divisions. The 12U Blaze Black made it to the semi-finals and were within a couple runs of making it a Blaze on Blaze 12U championship!

This is the seventh year of the tournament and it has become a highlight of the summer baseball season in the North Suburbs. The tournament is run entirely by volunteers – mostly families and parents within the Glenview Blaze organization – and games are played at local Glenview parks over four days.
