Village Links Hosts Sectional Qualifier for U.S. Open Championship

Glen Ellyn, IL – On Monday, June 4, the Village Links hosted one of eleven sectional qualifiers taking place across the nation and in Japan and England for the United States Golf Association’s 112th U.S. Open Championship set to take place June 11-17 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif.

In total, the Village Links welcomed 48 hopefuls from around the world vying for two spots to play in this month’s major championship. The field included several notable professional and amateur players including Tom Pernice Jr. who was looking to make his eleventh U.S. Open appearance, and Tim Herron, a Minnesota native who has played in nine previous U.S. Opens, as well as the coach-player duo from the University of Illinois, Mike Small and Thomas Pieters. The field also featured Andrew Pope, a decorated golfer from Glenbard West High School.

After 36 holes of the 7,076-yard layout course at Village Links, it was Anthony Summers (66-67, 133) from Australia, and Tim Herron (68-66, 134) who prevailed. Andrew Pope, the lone Glen Ellyn competitor, finished tied for fifteenth place with a (74-69) 143 finish.

Monday’s qualifier marked the fifth time the Village Links has hosted a U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier and its first since 2005.
