Northwestern Memorial and Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital Named National Leaders in Patient Safety

Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital have been named among the nation's safest hospitals for patients by The Leapfrog Group. The non-profit organization assigned letter grades to more than 2,600 acute care hospitals nationwide as part of its Hospital Safety Score initiative. Both Northwestern Memorial and Northwestern Lake Forest received an “A” for overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. Only 27.5 percent of hospitals achieved an “A” grade.

“We are honored to have both Northwestern Memorial and Northwestern Lake Forest recognized for our shared commitment to patient safety,” said Jay M. Anderson, vice president, quality and operations at Northwestern Memorial. “The ‘A’ grade reflects a longstanding focus on creating the safest possible environment for our patients and is in line with our Patients First mission.”

Every day in the United States, more than 400 people die because of preventable hospital errors. The Hospital Safety Score is a first-of-its-kind initiative that aims to save lives and bring attention to the issue of patient safety by highlighting the nation’s best hospitals while warning against the worst. Northwestern Memorial and Northwestern Lake Forest are among only 729 hospitals nationally and 51 facilities in Illinois to receive an “A” grade.

The grades are derived from expert analysis of publicly available data using 26 evidence-based, national measures of hospital safety. The grades were calculated by a nine member “Blue Ribbon” panel with representatives from University of Michigan, Harvard University, Stanford University, John Hopkins University, Vanderbilt University, University of California – Davis, and University of California – San Francisco. The Leapfrog Group uses the collective leverage of large purchasers of health care to initiate breakthrough improvements in the safety, quality, and affordability of health care for Americans.

Northwestern Memorial and Northwestern Lake Forest share a longstanding commitment to a culture of quality, safety and service. By aspiring to the highest standards for quality and patient satisfaction with collaborative focus on process improvement, both institutions are committed to delivering care that is safe and without error.
