Brokaw representatives accept the grant presented by JLKD President Christina Brady

In their continued work to promote literacy and education, the Junior League of Kane & DuPage Counties, Inc. (JLKD) announced today the winners of the 2012 JLKD Innovative Teaching Grant of $500 for their outstanding commitment to education.

“This grant is a way in which JLKD can further its mission of helping local children by providing resources to the dedicated teachers who influence their development of literacy skills on a daily basis,” said JLKD President Christina Brady.

The 2012 JLKD Grant for Innovative Teaching was awarded to the teaching team of Jenn Kirberg, Maria Gonzalez, and Susan Craig of Brokaw Early Learning Center in Oswego. Brokaw provides services to at-risk and special needs culturally diverse students aged 3-5 years. Much of the program is state funded and has therefore felt the effects of the state budget crisis. The grant money will be spent on enhancing literacy materials with additional thematic manipulatives and books to link literacy to all content areas of the curriculum. These materials will impact all 500 students enrolled at Brokaw and assist them in meeting developmental assessments based on Early Learning Standards.

JLKD is an organization of over 160 women from throughout DuPage, Kane, Kendall and Will Counties which focuses on improving the quality of life for children at risk in the community by providing critical resources and programs through our trained volunteers.
