Glen Ellyn Man Living Pain Free After Direct Anterior Approach Hip Surgery

Just days after orthopedic surgeon Dr. Steven Louis performed Direct Anterior Approach hip replacement surgery on Richard Herner, 74, of Glen Ellyn, he was able to walk up and down stairs, reach tall cabinets and step in and out of a bathtub. Just a month later, he was enjoying a few of his favorite activities; a refreshing swim and taking long walks without any pain whatsoever.

“Before my hip surgery, I was in tremendous pain and walking with a terrible limp,” Richard explained. “Now, I’m living without any pain at all. I went into surgery on a Monday, and I was walking completely fine by Friday. I truly feel like the surgery was a miracle.”

Richard rebounded so quickly because the Direct Anterior Approach allowed Dr. Louis to reach his hip joint from the front of the hip (as opposed to the side or posterior, which is typical in traditional hip replacement surgery). This technique allows a hip replacement to be completed without detaching muscle from the pelvis or femur. Consequently, the important gluteal muscles, which play a key role in hip function, are less affected than with traditional hip replacement surgery.

Dr. Louis performs his surgeries at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, and now trains other Hinsdale Orthopaedic surgeons in this technique. To date, he has performed over 400 successful Direct Anterior Approach procedures on Chicago and Northwest Indiana area patients.

“Richard was a perfect candidate for this new procedure because he was in crippling pain and wanted to get back to an active lifestyle as quickly as possible,” Dr. Louis explains. “This less-invasive approach is much easier on the patient because there is less tissue and muscle damage involved in the surgery.”

Richard’s regular physician referred him to Dr. Louis because of his severe pain. “I didn’t know anything about Dr. Louis when I went in for the appointment,” Richard explained, “but I am so grateful I was referred to him. The operation was absolutely wonderful.”

A quick recovery time was especially important to Richard, since he lives alone. “I was very concerned about being confined to my bed for a long time, but I was able to take care of myself immediately,” he said. “I would absolutely recommend Dr. Louis to anyone experiencing hip pain. I’m living a much better life than I ever was before.”
