At Alden Gardens of Bloomingdale Supportive Living Community, senior residents drum for health once a month.

Residents sit in chairs in a circle with huge drums on the floor in front of them and tap out their names in syllables or follow leader Phyllis Mueller in other rhythms.

Drumming circles help seniors engage with one another, inspiring smiles, laughter and joy. The benefits include exercise, self-expression and community building.
“Phyllis is very cheerful, and the drumming makes you happy,” says Heather Passantino, an Alden Gardens resident.

The drum circle is one of many social and recreational activities offered to residents of Alden Gardens of Bloomingdale, a senior supportive living facility located at 285 E. Army Trail Rd. in Bloomingdale. Residents live in private apartments and enjoy three meals a day prepared by an executive chef. Other services at no additional charge include weekly housekeeping and laundry service. In addition, certified nursing assistants are on-site 24 hours a day to offer assistance.
