Women’s Wisdom Program Provides Safe Haven for Expression through Art

An exhibit including mono-prints, paper quilts, assemblages, canvas weavings and other mixed media works will be on display throughout September at Gallery 200, 200 Main Street, West Chicago.  A collection of art by women from all walks of life, “Women’s Wisdom Artworks 2010” highlights the art program of the People’s Resource Center in Wheaton, Illinois.

The People’s Resource Center provides not only basic services of food, clothing and housing assistance, but also a safe haven for those who want to express themselves through art.  The initial program, established 12 years ago as Women’s Wisdom, is now part of the People’s Art program, which encompasses an after school Kids Art program as well as pottery, sewing, dance and family art classes.  Women’s Wisdom meets on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and every woman is welcome to attend the complimentary classes.

Program instructor and Gallery 200 member Cheryl Mahowald coordinated the 72-piece exhibit from students attending her Thursday evening class.  The loosely structured program accommodates the schedules of volunteer instructors and has grown to include ceramics and fused glass, as well as some open studio times.  As Mahowald explained, “The focus of our group is the artwork, but it is also a social outlet for people where we support creativity in a non-judgmental environment.”

Participating artists from the program include:  Vicki J. Rudnik, Gloria Wolfersheim, Patricia Wegner, Rosie Dixon, Sr. Kate Albers, Jessy Williamson, Cindy Gray, Cheryl Mahowald, Sheila Kanak, Rita Moon Kain, Christine Schaffer, Carol Thomas, Debbie McEllenborough, Rochelle Corso, Cheryl Weston, Karen Nelson, Mary Warner and Nina Dvorak.

Join the Women’s Wisdom artists at a free opening reception of art on Friday, September 10, 2010 from 6:00-9:00 p.m., where entertainment and light refreshments will be available. Contact Gallery 200 at (630) 293-9550 or visit www.gallery200.org for more information.
