Memorial Field lights will be installed this year

Glenbard West High School’s Memorial Field will light up this fall after the school board members approved a bid to install light poles on the athletic field in Glen Ellyn.

The decision to approve a bid this week to install 60-and 70-foot light poles on the artificial turf field where Glenbard West athletes practice and compete comes after months of meetings with the village to gain permission for the lights and to address the worries of residents who were concerned about safety and whether lights would destroy the surrounding neighborhood’s quaint character.

Nonetheless the school board voted on Monday night 4-1 to approve a bid with Thorne Electric, Inc. for $220,395. Board member Mary Ozog, an outspoken opponent of the lights, voted no. Board members Yadav Nathwani and F. Thomas Voltaggio were absent.

Assistant Superintendent Chris McClain said total project cost would be $250,705. The project is expected to be completed this fall and is fully funded by private donations.
