Successful 'Leap Night' Shows Off the 'Geneva Factor' by Dawn Vogelsberg

Wednesday night, downtown Geneva retailers showed Chicken Little the door, and I say good riddance.

There is no denying that the economy is not what it once was, but the retail sky is not falling in downtown Geneva. I am not talking about the hard numbers of the retail industry, I am talking about something intangible that we often call "the Geneva factor"—hard to describe, but you know it when you see it. Geneva's One Cool Winter's Night was a perfect example of why our downtown will remain a great place to shop and dine.

First, two business owners, Bridget Lescher of Odalisque Beauty Apothecary and Sherie McGowan of Cocoon both known for their positive attitude, came up with the idea. .

They described it as "A fun night of retail exploration made shimmery by outdoor luminaries and indoor boutique charm, topped off with a sultry after-party serenaded by one of today's coolest torch singer/songwriters."

Then they presented the idea to other businesses, and so many joined in, each with their own special promotion to add to the fun. Marketing it so well, especially to the locals, brought more than 300 people out to the streets and stores.

Based on the amount of bags on the street, it was clearly a successful event for the businesses and shoppers. What a great use of our extra day this year!

Just hope we don't have to wait four years for a repeat!
