Chicago Tribune endorsements for collar county races

County Board Chairman: The estimable incumbent, Karen McConnaughay, is running for the Illinois Senate. There are spirited races to succeed her. For the Republicans, our choice is Kevin Burns, the mayor of Geneva. Business development there has thrived under his leadership. Burns calls for a “forensic” review of the county budget, updated procurement procedures and a trimmed-down county workforce. His extensive experience in municipal and county government merits endorsement over state Sen. Chris Lauzen, who has had something of a quixotic career in the Senate. Former Carpentersville Village President Bill Sarto gets the nod in the Democratic primary. He says he wants to eliminate township government, which we strongly support. Sarto is a former auditor in the state Comptroller’s office, skills that should serve him well in this office. He is endorsed over former St. Charles Mayor Sue Klinkhamer.
