SHORE Community Services Celebrates 60 Years of Service

SHORE Community Services is having a Diamond Jubilee celebration to commemorate 60 years of service to children and adults with developmental disabilities.

When SHORE Community Services began its first program in the basement of an Evanston home, it was the beginning of a new era for persons with developmental disabilities. Prior to that basement school, parents with “mentally retarded” children had basically three options, which included: keeping their child at home, sending their child to a state institution, or, if they had the resources, they could send their child to a private nursing facility. Since that modest beginning, SHORE has expanded the types of services it offers to include: day programs, job training services, early childhood instruction, respite care, and residential options. Last year, SHORE provided services to nearly 400 individuals and their families who live in Chicago and the North Shore area.

A gala will take place Saturday, April 9th at the Hilton Orrington Hotel in Evanston. Hosts of the party will include: Dan and Martha Lloyd, Dave and Heidi Lloyd, and Mike and Ann Roberts, members of the Lloyd family whose parents, Tom and Lois Lloyd, started SHORE’s first program in the basement of their home. The evening will have a cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres, dinner, and a concert provided by Under The Streetlamp, which features the recent stars of the Chicago and Los Angeles productions of Jersey Boys. Tickets are $200.00 per person and space is limited.

Though organizers hope to use the event to honor the many individuals who have helped make SHORE what it is today, the main purpose of the event is to raise funds so that SHORE will be able to continue providing quality services to its persons served and their families. The fundraising goal for the 60th Anniversary Celebration has been set at $150,000. That goal can be reached with your help. Numerous underwriting opportunities are still available including the Marquee headlining slot. SHORE is also in need of silent and live auction items.
