Saint Francis Hospital Honors Evanston Mayor Lorraine H. Morton

On Tuesday, June 2, Saint Francis Hospital honored Evanston Mayor Lorraine H. Morton with its first annual C.A.R.E.S Award. The award honors one Evanston community member who has exhibited the values of Saint Francis Hospital and Resurrection Health Care: Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence, and Service.

The selection committee--comprised of the Saint Francis Hospital executive team and other leaders at Saint Francis Hospital--unanimously chose the Evanston Mayor for its first annual award. Mayor Morton recently retired from her 16-year position as Mayor of Evanston.

"We look to Lorraine as a heartfelt example of what it means to serve the community with dignity, grace, good humor and respect," said Angelique Richard, vice president of Patient Care Services.

Morton spent 25 years in public service, first working tirelessly as an Evanston City Council Member and then as Mayor, after she retired from a 35-year career with the Evanston school system as a Junior High School Principal and teacher.

"Mayor Morton learned as a principal and teacher to protect and defend her students. As a Mayor, she has been the protector of the health and safety of all her Evanston constituents. She has fought to enrich the lives of those she represented and has helped all learn to be better people," said Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin.

"Lorraine has been a personal inspiration to all of us. After two "retirements" now, the question is not what she will do next, but can we all keep up with her?" said Margo Schafer, director of public relations at Saint Francis Hospital.

In her remarks at the award ceremony, Mayor Morton, with characteristic humility, deflected the honor and instead spoke about the value of Saint Francis Hospital, "I am not surprised that Saint Francis was designated as one of the best places to work...it is a gem that is shining with a brilliance that will not go away."

Saint Francis Hospital is a Level I Trauma Center and has a long history of leadership and firsts in cardiac medicine and technologies.
