Water Rescue Teams At Route 83 & I-290 Ramp

At approximately 11:30 PM on Sunday, Fire Department Water Rescue Teams were called to the scene of a report of four individuals on top of a vehicle in the water at Lake Street and Route 83. Elmhurst, Addison, Oakbrook Terrace and Villa Park each sent Fire Department units. Addison Fire Department began to activate their specialized dive team. Arriving police departments isolated the vehicle off the roadway near the entrance ramp to I-290 East just north of the overpass for Lake Street.

The incident was quickly resolved without the use of special equipment. A vehicle had left the roadway north of the ramp from Route 83 to the I-290 highway. Elmhurst Fire Department took command of the incident and was able to return fire units in route from Oakbrook Terrace and Villa Park. All of the responding Fire Departments have water rescue teams and some equipment for water rescue on their engines. Addison and Elmhurst having special dive teams and equipment including water rescue craft. The departments often train together for deep water and swift water rescues.

A vehicle was observed at the scene off of the ramp to I-290 Eastbound in the upright position with all four tires submerged. The passenger compartment of the vehicle did not appear to be under water. The ramp for I-290 Eastbound was closed temporarily for emergency equipment and while towing equipment was positioned to move the vehicle back to the roadway.

The DuPage County Sheriff Department took the lead in the accident investigation and was not able to provide any information about the incident.
