Abner S. Ganet, a former two-term mayor of Elmhurst, served in an Army unit that liberated a German concentration camp at the end of World War II, an experience that gained greater meaning when he met Nobel Peace Prize recipient Elie Wiesel a half century later.

“He witnessed some pretty horrific things during the war, but meeting Elie Wiesel changed his life,” said his son Fred. “It gave him a calling.”

Mr. Ganet, 86, Elmhurst’s mayor from 1977 to 1985, who was awarded the 2010 Founders Medal by Elmhurst College, where he was a trustee for more than 30 years, died of complications related to surgery on Saturday, March 31, in Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.
