Grave sites provide index of Downers Grove history

Local historians say the Main Street Cemetery in downtown Downers Grove is not only unusual but also a key to unlocking local history. First dedicated in 1856, the cemetery is final resting spot for many of the village's prominent early citizens. One notable exception is the village namesake and first settler, Pierce Downer, who died one day after his wife Lucy Ann and could not be transported to the cemetery because Saint Joseph Creek was too swollen. Instead Downer is buried in a small family plot tucked away off a village street on a knoll that used to be the high point of his property. Read the full story.
