St. Mary of Gostyn school in Downers Grove hosted its 3rd annual girls basketball tournament in November. This tournament began on the weekend of November 18 and lasted for three weeks. The tournament attracted 24 fifth- and sixth-grade girls basketball teams from all over DuPage County. This DuPage Parochial League tournament is the only one of its kind in the area. It allows girls teams to get a taste of real competition before their official league seasons begin.

“With the 24 teams registered this year, we doubled the number of participating teams from the inaugural tournament two years ago”, said Dennis Joven, St. Mary’s athletic director. “Every year, the tournament grows in popularity as the schools in the area realize the importance of getting some pre- season basketball experience. We are proud of the growing popularity of this tournament.”

“I was very impressed with the quality of the athletes from all the schools who participated in the tournament,” added Tom O’Keefe, St. Mary’s basketball coordinator. “That is a testament to the excellent basketball coaches who spend time working with the kids.” More than 200 girls participated in the three-week tournament.

The teams competed in one of four brackets. The winners were:
5th grade A: St. Michael of Wheaton
5th grade B: St. Joseph of Downers Grove
6th Grade A: St. Petronille of Glen Ellyn
6th Grade B: St. Mary of Gostyn

In addition to basketball, St. Mary’s no-cut sports programs include cross country, volleyball and cheerleading. St. Mary of Gostyn school offers preschool, full- and half-day kindergarten and excellence in its first through eighth grade Catholic education.
