Deerfield Park Foundation announces Scholarship Winner

Twenty-five, well-qualified candidates applied for consideration to be selected as the recipient of the Deerfield Park Foundation’s first Linda Gryziecki (college/post-secondary institution) Scholarship. After careful review of all applicants’ materials and credentials, five Semi-Finalists were selected and interviewed by the Deerfield Park Foundation’s Linda Gryziecki Scholarship Committee. The Committee expressed that they were presented with quite a challenge in selecting just one recipient of a $1,000 scholarship, since all candidates possessed such amazing skills, background, education and overall competencies.
All 25 of the applicants have worked and/or volunteered at the Deerfield Park District recently (and/or are working currently). All have a minimum 3.0 GPA (out of 4.0); a letter of recommendation; lengthy work and/or volunteer experiences, including varying types and lengths of service to the community, at school and elsewhere; and have submitted a required essay.
Ultimately, the Scholarship Committee selected Deerfield resident Callie Wilbat as the winner of this first-time Linda Gryziecki Scholarship. The Scholarship will be applied to Callie’s tuition to the University of Michigan for the school year beginning fall, 2012. A recognition ceremony will be conducted at the beginning of the Monday, May 21, 7:00 p.m. Deerfield Park Foundation meeting, in the Hickory Room at Jewett Park Community Center. In addition to the Foundation Board and Callie being present for the ceremony, retired Deerfield Park District Executive Director Linda Gryziecki (for whom the scholarship is named), Deerfield Park Board Commissioners and Callie’s family and friends are invited to attend. The Park Board of Commissioners was instrumental in bringing this Scholarship to fruition.
Callie, a Deerfield High School (DHS) Graduate, is currently a college freshman attending the University of Michigan. Her Major is Psychology, Brain Behavior and Cognitive Science; and she may pursue Speech Therapy or a career related to Psychology. Callie volunteers with stroke patients and those with aphasia. She has been involved with Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity, and through her Sorority, is actively involved in a philanthropy program. During her time thus far at U of Michigan, Callie received the William J. Branstrom Freshman Prize, The U of M Rogel Award of Excellence and more. Callie started working for the Deerfield Park District as a Swim Instructor early in her high school years and has since also added her skills as a lifeguard to her positions. At DHS she was President of the Tumblers and Co-Captain/Captain of Lacrosse team as a Junior/Senior respectively. She was also a tutor, a Warrior Buddy, an aide to an Essential Living Skills student and a volunteer elsewhere.
The Linda Gryziecki Scholarship is administered through the Deerfield Park Foundation) the fundraising arm of the Deerfield Park District, supporting programs and services including: Grants-In-Aid for residents in serious financial need to attend Deerfield Park District programs; projects such as Deerfield’s ThorGuard Lightning Predication System, Recycling Containers for parks and park/school locations; the Linda Gryziecki Scholarship and more).
The Deerfield Park Foundation thanks all of the candidates who applied for this year’s Scholarship, congratulates them on all their fine accomplishments to date, and wishes them all the very best in the years to come.
