Bike Safety Day in Honor of Lakeview Student

As summer begins, the students at Concord Elementary School in Darien were reminded of the importance of bike safety through a special day in honor of Lakeview Junior High student, Hunter Himes. Hunter was severely injured in a bike accident several months ago. Concord second grader, Hunter Long, heard about this accident and wanted to reach out and help in some way even though he did not know Hunter Himes personally. In talking to his mom, Ginny, and Concord principal, Dr. Laura Anderson, Hunter Long came up with the idea to hold a bike safety day at Concord. The idea grew to include Darien Police Officer, Nick Skweres as well. Officer Skweres held a bicycle safety class in every physical education class. He covered topics such as bicycle maintenance and rules of the road, in addition to properly fitting each child in his or her bike helmet. Finally, Hope for Hunter bracelets were sold to help raise money for Hunter Himes’ recovery.
