Susan Ryan devoted almost 20 years of her life to supporting other cancer victims at Wellness House and Gilda’s Club. (May 30, 2012)

When cancer in the soft tissue of Susan Ryan’s right leg forced surgeons to remove some muscle, she sought emotional support at Wellness House of Hinsdale, and then became the organization’s first volunteer coordinator.

Mrs. Ryan, 68, of the Near North Side, who died of complications related to cancer on Tuesday, May 22, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, made one last selfless act in death. She donated her eyes to the Illinois Eye Bank.

Born Susan Mannebach in Aurora, Mrs. Ryan spent most of her childhood in Downers Grove and was a 1961 graduate of Nazareth Academy in La Grange Park. For three years, she attended Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, where she met her future husband.

The couple wed in 1965 and settled in Darien, where they raised their two children.
